Etimología

Spinus: Griego, spinos -ave no identificada mencionada por Aristófanes, Dioniso, Hesiquio, y otros.
uropygialis: Latín, uropygium -grupa, rabadilla (deriva del Griego, ouropugion -rabadilla de las aves).

Identificación

El macho posee cabeza, cuello y parte dorsal, negros. Plumas del dorso orilladas de amarillo verdoso. Rabadilla, pecho, abdomen y subcaudales, amarillos. Alas y cola negras con la base de las plumas amarillas.
La hembra  es más pálida.
Otros datos
- Tamaño: 11,5 a 13 cms.

- Peso: 14 grs.

- Alimentación: mayormente semillas, y ocasionalmente insectos.

- Hábitat: laderas de montañas, acantilados, matorrales y llanuras ligeramente arboladas, incluido bosques de Polylepis.

- Reproducción: s/d
